The mechanism
A successful retrieval reconstructs the target from partial cues and updates the route used to reach it. A delay adds useful difficulty: the answer is no longer fully active, so recalling it requires more work. If the delay is too short, the attempt becomes repetition; if it is too long, repeated failure can replace learning with guessing. Feedback after each attempt closes the loop by correcting errors before they are reinforced.
What to measure
Track first-attempt accuracy, response time, the number of hints, and performance after a meaningful retention interval. Immediate accuracy alone can reward temporary familiarity. A better view separates acquisition from retention: how quickly an item becomes retrievable, how long it remains retrievable, and whether it can be recalled from a changed cue or context. For repeated items, store the lag since the previous attempt and distinguish recall before feedback from corrected performance.
Useful practice conditions
- Ask for an answer before showing it, then provide concise corrective feedback.
- Schedule the next attempt after some forgetting has occurred; increase intervals after success and shorten them after failure.
- Mix old and new material, and vary cues carefully so retrieval is not tied to one screen layout or wording.
Limits of the conclusion
Better recall in a trained set shows improved access to that material under those test conditions. It does not by itself demonstrate a broad change in memory, reasoning, or everyday performance. Results also depend on prior knowledge, item difficulty, feedback quality, and the length of the final delay, so comparisons are meaningful only when those conditions are reported.
