The Stroop test, explained — and how to practice it

Read the word, ignore the ink — or is it the other way around? The Stroop test is one of the most famous demonstrations in psychology because it exposes something your brain does automatically and cannot easily switch off.

The effect

Show the word RED printed in blue ink and ask someone to name the ink color. They slow down, stumble, sometimes blurt the word instead. Reading is so over-learned that it fires before you intend it to, so naming the color means actively overriding that reflex. The extra time this costs — the Stroop interference — is a clean, repeatable measure of one specific ability.

What it measures

The Stroop taps inhibitory control: the capacity to suppress a strong, automatic response in favor of a weaker, goal-relevant one. That is the same machinery you use to not check your phone mid-task, to hold your tongue, to stay on the harder of two paths. It is a core part of what researchers call executive function.

A smaller interference cost — naming the color almost as fast whether or not the word fights you — reflects stronger inhibition.

Can you train it?

Practice reliably shrinks your own interference across sessions: the conflict resolves faster as the override becomes more efficient. As with all cognitive training, the honest claim is narrow — you get better at resisting this kind of interference, not at “becoming smarter” in general. That narrower gain is still worth having, because inhibition shows up everywhere attention is under pressure.

How to practice

  • Run short Stroop blocks daily and watch your interference cost (incongruent minus congruent time), not just accuracy.
  • Push speed only as far as errors stay low — the skill is accurate override, not reckless guessing.
  • Mix in related inhibition paradigms so the gain generalizes a little further.
